1. Independence Day Picnic and Concert (free)
On Friday, July 3rd, picnic on the lawn of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center during the free Independence Day Picnic and Concert. Bring take-out and a blanket or chairs and mingle with locals and visitors alike with the pre-celebration kicking off at 6:00 p.m. and the program and concert starting at 7:00 p.m. This family-friendly event is a great way to start your stay in this classic Southern town, setting the tone for an exciting Fourth of July destination experience.
If you want to get your boogie on in an even smaller small town, instead head over to Rutledge Town Park for a special edition of the Rutledge Summer Concert Series on Friday, July 3rd. Hosting free, live music from 7-9 p.m. every Friday in the summer months, all you need to do is bring a picnic blanket or folding chairs and kick up your feet or dance into the night.
To celebrate the holiday, this popular concert series will be making it a special night by adding some Fourth of July flair. And while you’re in “small but special” Rutledge, make sure to walk around downtown to discover the beautiful murals. A local favorite commemorates military servicemembers throughout our nation’s history.
2. Community Reading of The Declaration of Independence
Join in a community reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026 in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Starting at 10:00 a.m. in Madison Town Park, the program will feature readers of all ages – from high school students to veterans – coming together to give voice to this founding document. With a special emphasis on reading the entire Declaration and saying “We The People” together as a community, all are welcome to come take part in this moment of national remembrance.
This event is Co-sponsored by the Henry Walton Chapter, NSDAR, of Madison, Georgia; American Legion Calvin George Post 37; and supported by the City of Madison.
3. Fill Up on BBQ in Bostwick ($5 per plate)
To enjoy good food for a great cause on July 4th, take a short 15-minute drive to the Pecan Grove in downtown Bostwick for the annual Fourth of July BBQ. Happening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., proceeds fund the Bostwick Fire Department and the Masonic children’s home. This is an easy way to enjoy the day for those seeking good food, good company, and a sense of community spirit.
Be sure to swing through downtown Bostwick before you leave and see if you recognize any classic movie scenes. This small Georgia town has played a starring role in several film favorites – most notably as the backdrop for the “Parker Hotel” in the 1992 hit My Cousin Vinny and the unforgettable prom finale in the 2011 remake of Footloose, filmed by the historic Cotton Gin.
4. Madison Fireworks Display (free)
Come sunset on Saturday, July 4th, watch the sky light up with a fireworks show presented by the City of Madison. Pre-show festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with family-friendly fun including live music, inflatables and food trucks at Morgan County Parks & Recreation’s new Sports Complex (1811 Old Buckhead Road). Pack a picnic or grab a bite on-site, bring a frisbee, and enjoy the summer evening until the fireworks begin at dark.
Visitors are welcome to stay and watch fireworks from the Sports Complex, or, if you’d prefer more room to relax, head to one of several nearby viewing spots. Great views are available from the parking lots at Morgan County High, Middle, Elementary, and Primary Schools, as well as the Soccer Complex. Please note: Fireworks will launch from Bill Wood Park, which will be closed to the public for safety.
5. Star Spangled Wagon Rides at Hard Labor Creek State Park ($5)
Celebrate America’s 250th birthday the old-fashioned way with a Star Spangled Wagon Ride across Hard Labor Creek State Park. Offered every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th, Park Rangers will share fun facts about Hard Labor Creek and the history of the area while celebrating the birth of our great country.
Bonus! Celebrate Local Heroes at a Farmer’s Market (free)
Can’t pack it all in with just one weekend away? Come back on Saturday, July 11th, when the Farmer’s Market at Farmview Market will host a Local Heroes event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy live music, BBQ, local produce, artisan crafts and more. Local Heroes – law enforcement, firefighters, EMS and active and veteran military personnel – will be celebrated and will receive a free BBQ lunch, while supplies last. It’s the perfect place to slow down, shop local, and experience the spirit of small-town Georgia.
